A forum for the open-minded, this course invites serious yet unprejudiced reflections on problems of faith through film as well as the visions and inspirations Christian faith can possibly offer to our contemporary world. With the arguably cultural shift from literary to visual, we are now immersed in the power of sight and the wealth of visual experience in postmodern culture. Images, as opposed to texts, emerge as central to the representation of the world. As movies have captured the popular imagination, seeing the movies is a participation in a central ritual of modern culture’s intersection of visuality, spirituality and corporeality. Through a combination of lectures, readings, the viewing of films (some in their entirety, some in selected segments), and stimulating class discussion, we will engage in a vigorous dialogue between spirituality and visuality, contemporary cinema and the Christian religion.
